The Fergus Story
In the beginning
A sudden change of Garry Fergus’ employment in August 1983 was the catalyst for himself and his wife Jann to start Fergus Builders in October of that year.
Going from an employee to self-employed, while living in a shed with a baby and a toddler, was always going to be a gamble in the difficult economic climate at that time.
However, from this serendipitous start, Garry’s passion, self-belief and determination, coupled with Jann’s support and encouragement quickly propelled the company forward.
The rewards, both personally and financially from Fergus’ first projects created a lifelong enthusiasm in Garry, that rarely waned over the next 22 years of his life. His somewhat ‘Maverick’ approach to the industry saw him butt heads with people at times, however his word was his bond and handshake deals were the norm. He was a man of vision and he saw Taj Mahal’s where other people saw mounds of dirt.
Later on
After Garry’s passing in 2006 Jann stayed on as Managing Director, and though we faced some challenging times in Garry’s absence we always continued the very strong culture of integrity, respect and quality.
Ben, Shannon and Nathan continued to carry on the traditions, utilising the skills and principles that were instilled in them by Garry, with the support of Jann and the dedicated Fergus Team. Upon Shannon’s departure in 2016 the team was strengthened by the addition of Adam, who rejoined the team after beginning his career with Fergus as a cadet in construction management.
AND NOW
Under the direction of Ben, Nathan, and Adam the company continues to grow and evolve in this ever changing industry, while creating their own relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and clients.
The boys strongly believe in the ‘grow your own’ philosophy, as Ben and Nathan themselves started as apprentices and Adam as a Building Cadet. Here at Fergus, we take pride in creating a stable, enjoyable workplace, enabling us to retain valuable employees.
This gives our clients the confidence to know that they have made the right decision by building with Fergus.
